NHS hospitals are set to trial an AI tool designed to revolutionize prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Vanguard Path study, funded by Prostate Cancer UK and led by Oxford University researchers, aims to last three years and will utilize over 4,000 biopsy samples from men with prostate cancer. The ArteraAI Prostate Biopsy Assay, an AI tool that analyzes biopsy images to generate personalized risk scores, has already demonstrated its potential in clinical trials, predicting which high-risk prostate cancer patients would benefit from the drug abiraterone. However, its versatility extends to predicting hormone therapy benefits for less aggressive prostate cancer cases and identifying patients who can be monitored without immediate treatment. Dr. Matthew Hobbs, Prostate Cancer UK's research director, envisions a future where this tool becomes a universal decision-making aid for prostate cancer patients, regardless of their aggressiveness level. The study will initially focus on UK patients, comparing the tool's predictive accuracy to existing treatment choices. It will then be tested in three NHS sites, with clinicians using the tool alongside standard diagnosis pathways. The trial aims to assess the tool's impact on treatment decisions and the time between diagnosis and treatment. Experts believe this tool could significantly reduce under- and over-treatment, marking a significant advancement in cancer care. The government's public health minister, Ashley Dalton, praised the trial, emphasizing the potential of technology to transform lives and improve cancer outcomes.
