Amazon Alexa's AI Makeover: Can It Beat ChatGPT? (2026)

Amazon's bold strategy to surpass ChatGPT: Enhancing Alexa's memory

Las Vegas, Nevada

Amazon is not just aiming for Alexa to recognize you; it desires her to remember details about you, akin to a trusted friend or family member. This philosophy underpins Amazon's vision for Alexa's future, which executives shared with CNN during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week.

Amazon seeks to rekindle the excitement that Alexa generated upon its 2014 launch: a novel, mainstream, user-friendly voice assistant for the home. Alexa's popularity sparked a resurgence in voice assistants, but the 2022 release of ChatGPT brought artificial intelligence into the mainstream, catching Amazon off-guard. The company has since spent two years revamping its product strategy to stay competitive.

In 2023, Amazon hinted at a more personalized and conversational assistant, and in 2025, it launched Alexa+. To stay ahead, Amazon must demonstrate that Alexa+ is not the same assistant from 12 years ago. According to Amazon devices and services chief Panos Panay, the key differentiator is the context between devices.

Alexa+ is crucial for Amazon as AI is hailed as the next major computing platform. Amazon's missed opportunity in mobile technology, largely ceded to Google and Apple, prompts a renewed effort to avoid repeating history. Making Alexa stand out is essential.

Amazon's new Alexa website, launched last week, mirrors the web browsers created by OpenAI and AI startup Perplexity to integrate their AI chatbots into web usage. Alexa.com allows users to chat with Amazon's assistant online and continue conversations on other devices like Amazon Echo and the Alexa app.

Panay emphasizes that Amazon isn't focused on developing the most cutting-edge AI model but on applying AI to real-world products using context from Amazon's devices and services. Apple is taking a similar approach with its upcoming Siri version, powered by Google's Gemini models and cloud technology.

Panay provides examples to differentiate Amazon's assistant from ChatGPT or Google's Gemini. When he told Alexa he needed a new harness for his dog, the assistant had options ready on his Echo Show by the time he returned. Similarly, when he and his family couldn't agree on a restaurant, Alexa suggested places they had previously visited, provided similar recommendations, and offered to book a reservation.

Google and OpenAI are pursuing similar paths, with Gemini and ChatGPT remembering context from previous conversations. Google can perform tasks like finding sporting event tickets, booking restaurants, and calling stores on behalf of users.

Panay asserts that Alexa's memory and ability to execute real-world tasks make it stand out. Amazon reports that Alexa+ is already leading to more engagement, with users having twice as many conversations with the upgraded Alexa compared to the previous version.

To become indispensable, Alexa must prove useful beyond shopping and recommendations. This involves shifting consumer perception of Alexa usage and increasing its use beyond Echo speakers. Research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners' data from August revealed that even over 10 years after the first Echo, people primarily use these devices for listening to music.

Integrating the assistant into the browser through Amazon's new Alexa.com website could address this challenge, enabling consumers to use Alexa in more online activities like work and vacation planning, tasks that contributed to ChatGPT's success.

Daniel Rausch, vice president of Amazon's Alexa and Echo divisions, stated that making Alexa more useful outside the home will be a significant focus this year. Amazon plans to add new capabilities to the Echo Frames, Alexa-enabled smart glasses launched in 2019, although specific details were not disclosed.

Amazon's acquisition of Bee, a company offering a wristband that records user conversations and provides insights, including chat summaries, reminders, and feedback on the discussion atmosphere, suggests a focus on enhancing Alexa's capabilities. After a day of testing the Bee bracelet, it generated a suggested to-do list based on recordings and accessed content, like the iPhone's Reminders app and location.

Rausch indicated that Amazon plans to integrate these capabilities with Alexa, aligning with the company's 2026 goals. However, this isn't Amazon's first foray into wearable technology. The company launched the Halo wristband in 2020, which recorded conversations and analyzed emotional tones, but it has since been discontinued, raising privacy concerns.

Addressing privacy concerns and criticism that Alexa+ is a ploy to encourage shopping, Panay emphasized that Amazon gives consumers choice. Customers can adjust how long Alexa saves voice recordings and transcripts, and users may reconsider privacy concerns if the product is sufficiently useful, as Panay noted, 'When you give customers something they love and need, the narrative changes quickly.'
