Get ready for a thrilling journey into the world of art and its ever-evolving landscape! Art Basel Hong Kong, a prestigious art fair, has just unveiled its lineup for the 2026 edition, and it's a real head-turner.
The Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 Lineup: A Showcase of Diversity and Change
This year's fair boasts an impressive 240 galleries from a diverse range of 42 countries and territories. The event, taking place from March 27 to 29 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, promises to be a vibrant celebration of artistic expression. With preview days on March 25 and 26, art enthusiasts can get an early glimpse of the extraordinary works on display.
The number of exhibitors remains consistent with last year's roster, but there are some exciting new additions and notable absences. The Galleries sector, featuring 182 exhibitors, showcases a diverse range of artistic practices, with over half of the galleries operating in the Asia-Pacific region, including 29 based in Hong Kong itself.
First-Time Exhibitors: A Global Perspective
Among the 32 first-time exhibitors, we find a fascinating array of galleries from far-flung corners of the globe. From Tokyo's A Lighthouse called Kanata to Sydney's The Commercial, and from Istanbul's Pilevneli to New York's Uffner & Liu, these galleries bring a unique perspective to the fair. Madrid's Galería Casado Santapau and 1 Mira Madrid / 2 Mira Archiv also join the lineup, adding to the international flavor of the event.
Notable Absences and Changes
However, not all galleries from the previous edition will be returning. Some 33 exhibitors from the Galleries sector have opted out, with reasons ranging from closures to acquisitions. Blum, Clearing, Kasmin (now represented by its successor, Olney Gleason), and Venus Over Manhattan are among those no longer participating. It's a reminder of the ever-shifting nature of the art world.
Echoes and Encounters: Curatorial Innovations
One of the most intriguing aspects of this year's fair is the brand-new sector, Echoes. This sector will showcase works created within the last five years, offering a glimpse into contemporary artistic practices. Among the 10 booths, Madrid's Max Estrella will present Tiffany Chung's embroidered maps of spice routes and Miler Lagos' carved book sculptures, while Hong Kong's Double Q Gallery will feature an immersive installation by Polish artist Natalia Załuska.
The Encounters sector, dedicated to large-scale installations, sculptures, and performances, will be curated by an impressive team. Mami Kataoka, director of Tokyo's Mori Art Museum, leads the curatorial team, which includes Jakarta-based curator and writer Alia Swastika, M+ visual art curator Isabella Tam, and senior curator Hirokazu Tokuyama from the Mori Art Museum.
Curatorial Leadership and Artistic Oversight
This year, media artist Ellen Pau takes on the responsibility of overseeing the film program, a first for an artist in this role. Meanwhile, Venus Lau, director of Jakarta's Museum MACAN, will oversee the conversations program. Additionally, for the fifth year running, Art Basel and M+ Museum will co-commission a public artwork for the museum's facade, with UBS presenting the work. This time, Pakistani-American artist Shahzia Sikander will create an animation inspired by her watercolor works.
Market Dynamics and Sales Expectations
Last year's sales results at Art Basel Hong Kong varied, with blue-chip galleries pre-selling or placing works on hold, while smaller and mid-size galleries had a slower day. The market's rebound is a hopeful sign for dealers, who are looking to replicate the energy from the third edition of Art Basel Paris, which was deemed the most successful to date by Paris-based advisor Francesca Napoli.
