In a bold move signaling a fresh start, the Atlanta Falcons have made significant changes in their leadership following yet another disappointing season. The team has officially parted ways with head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot after enduring their eighth consecutive losing season, which has led to the second-longest playoff drought in the history of the NFL.
This decision, announced by team owner Arthur Blank on Sunday, comes on the heels of the Falcons finishing their last two seasons with identical 8-9 records. Under Fontenot’s management, who was brought on board on January 19, 2021, after a notable career with the New Orleans Saints' scouting and personnel departments, the Falcons were unable to achieve a single winning season.
Fontenot's coaching choices have also raised eyebrows; his initial pick was Arthur Smith, who faced dismissal after three seasons marked by repeated 7-10 finishes. Most recently, Fontenot appointed Raheem Morris as head coach on January 25, 2024, in hopes of turning the franchise around. Unfortunately, this did not yield the desired results.
Throughout his tenure, Fontenot's draft decisions included high-profile selections such as tight end Kyle Pitts, who was picked fourth overall in 2021, wide receiver Drake London at eighth overall in 2022, and running back Bijan Robinson, again chosen eighth overall in 2023. These players have shown promise, but the lack of a cohesive winning strategy has overshadowed their potential.
Additionally, Fontenot made headlines in March 2024 by signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a lucrative four-year deal. This decision was soon followed by drafting promising University of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round of the 2024 draft, leading to questions about the team's strategic direction.
Morris, who had a brief stint as the Falcons’ interim head coach in 2020 after Dan Quinn’s dismissal when the team started 0-5, finished that season with a record of 4-7. His previous experience includes a challenging tenure as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011, where he ended up with a 17-31 record, alongside various assistant coaching roles at institutions like Kansas State, the Washington Redskins, and the Los Angeles Rams.
