BYD Shark 6 PHEV Pickup Truck: 436 PS, 0-100 km/h in 5.7s! Full Preview from Malaysia (2025)

Get ready to be amazed! The BYD Shark 6 pick-up, a powerhouse of innovation, has just made its debut in Malaysia, and it's turning heads with its incredible specs. This isn't just any truck; it's a glimpse into the future of automotive technology.

The Shark 6, showcased at the BYD Tech Discovery 2025 event in Kuala Lumpur, is making waves with its Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid technology. It's designed to rival the likes of the Toyota Hilux, and it's packing some serious punch.

This marks the second public appearance of the Shark 6 in the region, following its unveiling at the Bangkok Motor Show earlier this year. Initially slated for a September launch in Thailand, the plans were unfortunately scrapped due to a low number of pre-orders.

But what makes this pick-up so special? Let's dive into the details. The Shark 6 measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,917 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. It's only available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), sharing its powertrain with the Bao Leopard 5.

Built on a robust ladder frame chassis, the Shark 6 features a front/rear independent double wishbone suspension, ensuring a smooth ride even on challenging terrains. The truck bed offers a generous 1,450 liters of space and can handle a payload of 835 kg. Plus, it boasts a maximum towing capacity of 2,500 kg, making it a versatile workhorse.

Under the hood, the DMO Super Hybrid system is a marvel of engineering. It combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, delivering 184 PS (181 hp or 135 kW) and 260 Nm of torque, with two electric motors. The electric motors take the lead in propulsion, but the engine can kick in to directly drive the wheels at speeds above 70 km/h.

The front motor generates 231 PS (228 hp, or 170 kW) and 310 Nm, while the rear motor provides 204 PS (201 hp, or 150 kW) and 340 Nm. This potent combination results in a total system output of 436 PS (430 hp or 321 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. This allows the Shark 6 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 5.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 160 km/h.

The electric motors are powered by a 29.58 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an impressive electric range of 100 km. With a full tank of fuel, the total range extends to 840 km. Charging is also convenient, with support for AC charging up to 7 kW and DC fast charging up to 55 kW, which can charge the battery from 30% to 80% in just 25 minutes. The vehicle-to-load (V2L) function allows you to power external devices with up to 6 kW.

The models on display are Australian-spec, distinguished by their unique AU three-pin V2L sockets. Standard features include LED headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch central infotainment rotating touchscreen, powered front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a comprehensive ADAS suite (AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane keep, blind spot monitoring, 360-degree camera).

But here's where it gets controversial... There's no confirmed launch date for the Shark 6 in Malaysia, but its presence at the event suggests an imminent introduction. It could arrive next year, coinciding with the start of local assembly operations. However, given that pick-up trucks are tax-free in Malaysia, it might be imported as a completely built-up (CBU) unit beforehand. As of now, the only available version is the PHEV. While an EV variant has been hinted at, there's no sign of it yet.
