Comet 3I/ATLAS Livestream: Witness Its Journey to Interstellar Space (2026)

Prepare to say 'bon voyage' to Comet 3I/ATLAS! Today, you can witness its final farewell as it embarks on an incredible journey into interstellar space. The Virtual Telescope Project is hosting a free livestream, offering you a front-row seat to this cosmic send-off.

This isn't just any comet; it's an interstellar visitor, meaning it originated from outside our solar system. Discovered on July 1, 2025, 3I/ATLAS quickly earned its place as only the third interstellar object ever observed passing through our cosmic neighborhood. Its trajectory confirmed it wasn't bound to our Sun.

It reached its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion, on October 29. Interestingly, the comet brightened more than scientists anticipated, which left them intrigued. But here's where it gets controversial... The comet was obscured from view around perihelion, as it passed on the far side of the sun relative to Earth.

Following its solar rendezvous, 3I/ATLAS made its closest approach to Earth on December 19, coming within 168 million miles (270 million kilometers) of our planet. Its next significant event will be a close encounter with Jupiter in March, where it will buzz the gas giant at a distance of approximately 33.4 million miles (53.7 million km).

After this final planetary flyby, 3I/ATLAS will begin a silent journey that will last several thousand years. It will travel beyond the orbits of the outermost icy planets, before venturing through the Oort cloud, and finally returning to the vast expanse of interstellar space.

What are your thoughts on this interstellar wanderer? Are you fascinated by the idea of objects from other star systems visiting ours? Share your opinions in the comments below!
