Breaking News: David Tomasek, the Oilers' forward, is poised to terminate his contract and return to the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), leaving fans and analysts alike pondering what went wrong.
According to reports from Jonas Griberg and Johan Ekberg of Värmlands Folkblad, Tomasek is expected to sign with Färjestad BK once the holiday roster freeze lifts this Sunday. He has already departed Edmonton and is back in Sweden. The Oilers will place Tomasek on unconditional waivers, enabling him to officially end his contract and ink a new deal with Färjestad on Monday.
The story of Tomasek's brief NHL stint is a tale of high expectations meeting the harsh realities of professional hockey. Before his move to Edmonton, the 29-year-old right winger was a dominant force in the SHL. He enjoyed immense success with Färjestad BK during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, leading the league in at least one major statistical category on both occasions. His stellar performance last season, where he was named the SHL’s Most Valuable Player with a 24-33–57 scoring line and a +5 rating in 47 games, earned him a one-year, $1.2MM contract with the Oilers in April.
Tomasek's journey with the Oilers started with a bump. He was initially left off the opening-night roster due to salary cap issues, and was sent to AHL Bakersfield. However, he was recalled the next day and made his NHL debut. He played on the fourth line alongside Adam Henrique and Isaac Howard, recording an assist. Unfortunately, the limited ice time hindered his ability to make a significant impact on the scoresheet.
And this is the part most people miss... Tomasek's playing style didn't quite fit the Oilers' needs. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 210 lbs, he is a one-way offensive threat and power-play specialist. This profile made him an awkward fit in a bottom-six checking role. This limited his chances to showcase his skills and earn meaningful even-strength time alongside stars like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Tomasek's time in Edmonton will conclude with a stat line of three goals, two assists, and a -6 rating in 22 appearances, averaging 10:46 of ice time per game. He had been a healthy scratch for six consecutive games, with his last appearance on December 13 against the Maple Leafs.
But here's where it gets controversial... The financial implications are significant for the Oilers. Terminating Tomasek's contract will immediately relieve them of his $1.2MM cap hit. Since they're using their Long-Term Injury Reserve (LTIR) pool to stay cap-compliant, they won’t gain cap space. However, this move will increase their current cap space from $612.5K to $1.81MM, providing them with more flexibility to reinstate one of their four LTIR-bound players: Connor Clattenburg, Kasperi Kapanen, Noah Philp, and Jake Walman.
