A Historic Drone Warfare Demo: Indonesia and Jordan's Joint Effort
The skies above Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta witnessed a remarkable demonstration of drone warfare capabilities, attended by President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia and King Abdullah II of Jordan. This joint exercise, held at the Djamsuri Air Force Shooting Range, was a testament to the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations and a significant moment in military history.
Major-General Yudha Airlangga, commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces' Special Operations Command, emphasized the comprehensive planning behind the event. The demonstration began with a welcoming ceremony, showcasing the Merpati Putih self-defense skills training and national self-defense protocols. The highlight, however, was the tactical drone skills training, a joint effort between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Jordanian Armed Forces.
Lieutenant-Colonel Petrus Paramayudo Prabowo, commander of the Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres), explained that the drone display was a tactical simulation, integrating air and ground forces. The capabilities on display were impressive, including fiber-optic drones to counter enemy jammers, kamikaze drone technology, drones for breaching and opening doors during ground troop attacks, reconnaissance drones, and drones designed for dropping explosives and reserve components.
A total of 50 personnel were involved in this joint exercise, with TNI contributing 38 servicemen from various units, including reservists, and Jordan sending 12 of its best personnel. This level of readiness required intensive preparation, with Jordanian personnel training in Indonesia for approximately two months before the event. After returning, they continued their training by sending Jordanian personnel to Indonesia for further practice, culminating in a three-day training period before the demonstration.
The exercise served multiple purposes. Beyond the technical demonstration, it strengthened the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Jordan. Major-General Yudha expressed the hope for a strategic relationship, encompassing geopolitics, geoeconomics, and geostrategy between the two countries and across continents.
From the service members' perspective, the opportunity to work directly with their Jordanian counterparts was transformative. Lieutenant-Colonel Petrus emphasized the value of this collaboration, stating that it allows personnel to learn, broaden their horizons, and understand other cultures. The hope is that technologies like drones will be quickly adopted, modernizing the TNI and keeping it up-to-date.
The honor of appearing before President Prabowo and King Abdullah II was a significant moment for the troops. Lieutenant-Colonel Petrus expressed gratitude and pride, highlighting the unique opportunity to present their skills and receive the trust of two heads of state. This demonstration not only showcased military prowess but also fostered a deeper understanding and collaboration between the two nations.
