The EU's reliance on the US for defense within NATO has left the bloc vulnerable, lacking the necessary capabilities to defend against a potential Russian attack. This dependence gives the US significant leverage, especially as it is also Europe's largest trading partner.

A third European diplomat echoed these sentiments, adding, "We're tired of the bullying. We need to strengthen our resilience, unity, and internal market competitiveness. No more accepting tariff threats."
Despite the challenges, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged caution, saying, "Let's not rush to write off the transatlantic partnership."
