Govt Pledges Help to Reunite M. Indira Gandhi with Missing Child Prasana (2026)

A mother's fight for her child's return has sparked a national conversation, and the government has stepped in to offer support. The case of M. Indira Gandhi and her missing child, Prasana, has become a symbol of the complex issues surrounding child custody and religious conversion.

Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister, has pledged her commitment to helping Indira locate her child. Nancy emphasized the emotional aspect of the case, stating, "I understand the pain of a mother and her child being separated." She further promised to collaborate with the police to uncover the truth and facilitate a reunion, ensuring peace for the family.

But here's where it gets controversial... The case dates back to 2009 when Indira's ex-husband, Riduan (formerly K. Pathmanathan), unilaterally converted their three children to Islam and obtained custody through the syariah court. However, subsequent rulings by the Ipoh High Court and the Federal Court granted full custody to Indira, and the apex court declared the unilateral conversion null and void in 2018.

Despite these legal victories, Prasana, who was just 11 months old when taken, is now 17 years old, and her whereabouts remain unknown. Indira's other two children were returned to her in 2010.

And this is the part most people miss... Teresa Kok, an MP from Pakatan-Seputeh, suggested a potential lead to locate Riduan by tracking his Budi95 petrol subsidy and Rahmah Necessities Aid (Sara) credits redemptions. Nancy has instructed her officers to gather more information to assist Indira in her search.

The government's involvement in this case has raised important questions about the enforcement of court orders and the protection of parental rights. Should the government take a more proactive role in such cases? Is there a need for better coordination between religious and civil courts to ensure the well-being of children?
