A disturbing act of vandalism has drawn condemnation from Jewish community leaders following a graffiti incident at the office of federal MP Andrew Hastie in Mandurah, Western Australia. The spray-painted insult, reading "traitor goy," appears to be a direct response to Mr. Hastie's recent social media activity supporting new legislation aimed at combating hate groups.
Upon arriving at his office on Friday morning, staff were shocked to discover the derogatory phrase displayed prominently on the building. Rabbi Daniel Lieberman, chief rabbi of the Perth Hebrew Congregation, noted that the term 'goy' has been increasingly used as a derogatory label for non-Jewish individuals perceived as overly supportive of Jewish people.
This vandalism follows Mr. Hastie's vocal defense of legislation that targets hate speech, which gained traction and was ultimately passed with bipartisan support from the Liberal Party earlier this year. Initially hesitant, he had expressed his reluctance to support the Labor-led initiative designed in response to the Bondi terror attack but later voted for a revised version of the bill.
His subsequent posts on social media detailing his reasoning for this shift were met with a wave of criticism, with many followers branding him a "sellout" for his stance. Despite the attack on his office, Mr. Hastie has chosen not to publicly comment on the graffiti incident.
Describing the act as "disgusting," Julian Leeser, a Federal Liberal MP and member of the Jewish Australian community, condemned the graffiti, asserting that Mr. Hastie's vote in favor of laws aimed at eliminating hate preachers and addressing radical ideologies should be universally supported by Australians. "It is evident to me that this incident is an attempt to target Andrew for his commitment to protecting both Jewish Australians and the broader community through these vital laws," he stated.
Rabbi Lieberman echoed this sentiment, characterizing the graffiti as yet another instance of societal vilification. He remarked, "The implication behind this message suggests that Andrew Hastie is somehow under the influence of the Jewish community or acting solely in their interest concerning this hate speech legislation. This reflects a broader issue we face with vilification in our society. Individuals often feel entitled to personally attack others simply for holding differing opinions, which I consider deeply un-Australian."
In response to the incident, the Mandurah Police have initiated an investigation and are actively encouraging anyone who may have pertinent information to reach out to Crime Stoppers.
