What if one of the most iconic ancient wonders still holds secrets waiting to be uncovered? Recent scans of the Menkaure Pyramid at Giza have revealed mysterious voids that could point to a hidden entrance—a discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about this ancient structure.
The pyramids of Giza—Menkaure, Khafre, and Khufu—have stood as silent guardians of Egypt’s ancient past for over four millennia. While the Great Pyramid of Khufu often steals the spotlight, the Menkaure Pyramid, the smallest of the trio, has recently become the center of attention. Thanks to advanced scanning techniques, researchers have uncovered two small, air-filled voids behind its granite cladding, sparking speculation about their purpose and what they might reveal about the pyramid’s construction.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Could these voids be evidence of a second, hidden entrance? Or are they simply anomalies left behind by ancient builders? The debate is far from settled, and it’s a question that has archaeologists and historians alike scratching their heads.
Led by archaeologists Khalid Helal and Mohamed Elkarmoty of Cairo University, the research team employed a trio of non-invasive scanning methods as part of the ScanPyramids project. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and ultrasonic testing (UT) worked in harmony to peer through the pyramid’s stone walls without causing damage. The results? Two distinct anomalies on the eastern face, measuring just 1.5 meters wide and 1 meter high, and 0.9 by 0.7 meters, respectively. These voids, located just beneath the granite surface, behave like pockets of air rather than structural joints.
And this is the part most people miss: The configuration of the granite blocks around these voids bears a striking resemblance to those near the pyramid’s north entrance. In 2019, independent researcher Stijn van den Hoven proposed that this similarity could indicate a second entrance—a theory that adds an intriguing layer to the mystery.
While the team couldn’t determine the depth of these cavities, they suggest using cosmic-ray muography for further investigation. However, they emphasize that any interpretation of these findings should involve Egyptologists to ensure a comprehensive understanding. The study, published in NDT & E International, opens the door to new questions about the Menkaure Pyramid’s design and purpose.
