My Disappointing United Airlines Experience: A First-Class Flight to Forget

I've always prided myself on being a fair and balanced travel reviewer, going to great lengths to ensure my assessments are even-handed. But recently, I had a flight experience on United Airlines that left me feeling anything but balanced. Despite the promise of a brand new 737 MAX 9 with United Next interiors, complete with seatback screens and Bluetooth connectivity, my journey from Chicago to Los Angeles was anything but smooth.

What made this flight so disappointing? Well, for starters, the Wi-Fi was inoperative for the entire duration. In today's digital age, where connectivity is king, this is a dealbreaker. I understand that United is playing catch-up with its Wi-Fi offerings, but the fact that both American Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi on domestic flights is a stark reminder of the competition. Personally, I think United should be doing more to catch up, and the fact that the bandwidth wasn't great enough for everyone to connect is a significant shortcoming.

The lack of Wi-Fi was a major inconvenience, especially given that I needed the four hours to work on tasks that couldn't be downloaded beforehand. The flight attendants were lovely, but they couldn't fix the Wi-Fi either. The pilot tried resetting it a couple of times, but to no avail. It's frustrating when a new plane doesn't even have the basics working properly.

But the Wi-Fi issues weren't the only problem. The meal I ordered, the Greek Pastitsio, was a letdown. It arrived cold and looked nothing like the picture on the menu. The salad size was halved, with fewer greens and just a few sliced carrots and cucumbers. And instead of cheesecake, I got Magnolia Bakery custard. It was a poor meal, and the bread quality was subpar. My seatmate's Coq au vin and Pollo a la brasa looked much more appetizing, and I wish I had ordered one of those instead.

The plane itself wasn't clean, either. United still has a long way to go when it comes to proper cleaning between flights. The lavatory was filthy, and while I understand that passengers contribute to this, it's a reflection of the overall cleanliness of the aircraft. It's a small detail, but it adds up to a bigger picture of neglect.

Despite the issues, I did manage to get some rest, but it came at a cost. I arrived in LAX at midnight and had to stay up late at home to complete the work that should have been done on the plane. It left me tired for the next couple of days, and it's a reminder that these small details can have a significant impact on the overall travel experience.

In my opinion, United Airlines needs to step up its game when it comes to Wi-Fi and meal quality. The Wi-Fi needs to work, full stop. And the meals should not look like vomit. It's not that hard, because other carriers manage to offer more presentable meals without issue. I appreciate that United has come a long way from the Smisek era, but I'm afraid I'll be going out of my way to fly American Airlines or Delta Air Lines domestically if these issues persist. It's time for United to raise its game and provide a more consistent and reliable experience for its customers.
