Attention East of England Commuters: Weekend Rail Disruptions for Network Rail Upgrades
Get ready for some travel disruptions this weekend as Network Rail embarks on a series of crucial signaling upgrades across the East of England. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know:
Closed Railway Section
Between Saturday and Sunday, a significant portion of the railway south of Peterborough will be shut down. This closure is essential for the installation of in-cab digital signaling as part of the ambitious £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP). The ECDP aims to revolutionize travel by making journeys greener, safer, and more reliable.
Rail Replacement Services
During the closure, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) will provide rail replacement coaches between Peterborough and Bedford. These coaches will allow passengers to connect to train services heading to London St Pancras. So, even though the main line is closed, you can still reach your destination via alternative means.
Other Weekend Works
The ECDP isn't the only project in motion this weekend. Network Rail is also conducting various other maintenance tasks:
- Track renewal at Letchworth Garden City
- Rerailing at Welwyn and Wymondley
- Drainage improvements at Stevenage
Impact on Services
These works will have a direct impact on train services:
- No Grand Central services will be available.
- Hull Trains will operate a modified schedule, serving London St Pancras.
- Thameslink and Great Northern trains will be suspended between Potters Bar and Peterborough/Royston, and between Hertford North and Stevenage.
- Before 09:40 BST on Sunday, buses will temporarily replace trains on the route between Finsbury Park and Stevenage via Hertford North.
Network Rail's Perspective
Ricky Barsby, Network Rail's head of access integration for the ECDP, explains, "The work, including further testing, is a crucial step in our preparation for the introduction of digital in-cab signaling on the East Coast Main Line. We're also utilizing this opportunity to carry out vital maintenance at other East Coast locations during the same weekend."
