Planting timing proved to be a game-changer. "When varieties were planted early, they could outpace the wheat curl mite, a disease transmitter, and performed well. But late planting led to significant issues," Dr. Carver observed. This finding highlights the ongoing relevance of Jagger genetics in the breeding program.
The Showdown Variety: A Star Performer
OSU's Showdown variety stood out for its exceptional performance, even outshining newer experimental lines. "Showdown's ability to handle diseases like wheat streak mosaic was remarkable, but we're exploring newer options for the High Plains region," Dr. Carver said. The goal? To combine novel genes for disease resistance and introduce them into suitable backgrounds.

When it comes to managing diseases like rust and leaf spotting, flexibility is key. Dr. Carver recalled the heavy rust outbreaks of 2021 and 2024, emphasizing the need to adapt breeding programs accordingly. "While we focus on stripe rust and leaf rust resistance, we must also address emerging threats like wheat streak and leaf spotting," he added.
Genetics, not just chemicals, are the cornerstone of wheat health. Dr. Carver cautioned against over-reliance on fungicides, recalling the lessons from 2015. "Relying solely on fungicides can be a variety's downfall. We must trust genetics and management practices instead."

Dr. Carver gains valuable insights by observing farmers' field choices. "Double Stop's popularity, for instance, showcases farmers' appreciation for reliability and stable performance," he noted. This understanding guides OSU's breeding philosophy, which emphasizes the "graze-and-grain" system to identify varieties' strengths and weaknesses.
