Imagine a nation where faith and freedom intertwine, yet challenges test the fabric of unity—welcome to Nigeria's heartfelt Christmas message from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where hope meets reality in a heartfelt plea for peace.
Greetings from the State House in Abuja, my dear fellow Nigerians.
As we embrace this year's Christmas festivities, let's invite the boundless love of Jesus Christ and His profound teachings of grace, hope, peace, and goodwill to envelop every one of us. But here's where it gets truly inspiring: beyond the joy of gift-giving, caroling, and family gatherings, this holiday season calls us to pause and contemplate the profound impact of Jesus Christ's arrival and His role as the ultimate Prince of Peace, offering salvation to all.
On this sacred day, I extend warm wishes of a Merry Christmas to Christians not just in Nigeria, but across the globe. I'm deeply grateful to the Almighty for granting me the honor of leading our extraordinary nation, and I fervently pray for tranquility in our homeland, particularly among those with diverse religious perspectives.
In my role as your President, I'm unwaveringly dedicated to leveraging every tool at my disposal to foster religious liberty in Nigeria and shield believers of all faiths from harm and hostility. For beginners wondering what this means in practice, think of it as ensuring that everyone—from Christians attending church services to Muslims observing Ramadan—can do so without fear of persecution, much like how a diverse neighborhood thrives when neighbors respect each other's traditions.
As we commemorate the birth of Jesus, let's also take a moment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions Nigerian Christians, inspired by Christ's teachings, have made—and continue to make—to our nation's advancement. The compassionate spirit of Christ and the Gospel's call to action have motivated countless followers to support the most vulnerable and underserved in our society, such as those in need through charity drives or community outreach programs.
We salute those individuals who, emulating Jesus' example, labor diligently to foster harmony, kindness, and acceptance within their local communities. And this is the part most people miss: for those who illuminate hope and belief amidst adversity, this festive period serves as a gentle reminder that, even when faced with overwhelming obstacles, God's presence remains a constant source of strength.
Since stepping into office in 2023, I've consistently reassured our citizens of our firm dedication to upholding the security, cohesion, and steadiness of our great nation. This pledge holds strong, guided by divine principles and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Every Nigerian deserves the freedom to live, worship, and chase their dreams securely and with respect.
No individual should endure hardship simply for embracing and living out their faith, irrespective of their ethnic background or spiritual convictions. At the core of all major religions lies a deep affection for the Divine and for fellow humans, and these universal principles must unite us as an unbreakable, enduring family in our cherished country. But here's where it gets controversial: while we celebrate this shared idealism, some argue that historical tensions and inequalities between faiths in Nigeria suggest that verbal commitments alone aren't enough to bridge divides—could stronger, actionable policies be the key to true reconciliation?
Throughout the year, I've been fortunate to converse with influential leaders from our nation's primary religions, especially during times of heightened worries about religious intolerance and threats to safety. We'll expand on these dialogues to enhance teamwork between our government and religious groups, aiming to avert clashes and nurture a culture of serene coexistence.
With many of us hitting the roads to reunite with family and loved ones over the holidays, I encourage everyone to practice caution, patience, and responsible behavior while traveling. I pray for smooth, incident-free journeys for all travelers, ensuring they arrive safely back home.
Drawing on our faith in God's guidance and our shared resilience, we'll persist in crafting a more prosperous Nigeria that our descendants will look upon with pride.
Wishing you a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR
President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,
Federal Republic of Nigeria
