PTI Rally: Demanding Access to Meet Imran Khan in Pakistan Protest (2025)

Frustration boiled over as Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) supporters took to the streets, demanding access to their incarcerated leader, Imran Khan. This demonstration, a vehicle procession, began in Khyber district and snaked its way to Swabi district, fueled by the authorities' alleged denial of meetings between Khan and his party members and relatives.

Led by Ahmad Khan Niazi, a relative of Imran Khan, the protest originated in Khyber district. Interestingly, the PTI's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chapter distanced itself from the demonstration, stating it was organized independently by Niazi and not sanctioned by the party leadership. This raises the question: was this a grassroots movement, or a carefully orchestrated event?

While the KP chapter held back, the main PTI leadership, including Members of Provincial Assemblies (MPAs), Members of National Assemblies (MNAs), and senators, focused their protest outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan is being held. As the procession moved towards Peshawar, PTI workers from various districts, including Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, and Swabi, joined the ranks.

The climax of the protest saw PTI workers and leaders block the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway near the Swabi interchange, bringing traffic to a standstill. They gathered, marched, and chanted slogans against the federal government, vowing to maintain the blockade until Imran Khan's release. The district president, Sohail Yousafzai, had previously warned of this action if Khan's sisters were denied access to him in Adiala Jail.

The Insaf Students Federation, backed by party leaders, played a key role in shutting down the motorway. This led to a struggle by the district president and other leaders to manage the charged-up workers. The protestors, expressing their outrage, accused the federal government of employing "cruel tactics" to prevent Imran Khan's release, labeling him a political prisoner. They burned tires and continued shouting slogans, demanding his freedom. This action caused significant disruption, with travelers enduring lengthy delays.

A speaker at the protest asserted that Imran Khan was in good health, and one of his sisters had been allowed to meet him after repeated refusals. He emphasized the resolve of the party's supporters, stating that their pressure would ultimately secure Khan's release.

The PTI leaders further alleged that the federal government, through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, had undermined democracy and harmed the country's interests, particularly its economy. They also criticized the government's policies, claiming they had devalued the vote.

Imran Khan's cousin, Ahmad Naizi, addressed the protesters, praising their dedication and vowing to continue fighting for the party founder's release. He urged them to await further instructions from Imran Khan himself. The motorway blockade, which began at 5:30 PM, was eventually lifted at 6:20 PM.

But here's where it gets controversial... The PTI's actions, while passionate, caused significant inconvenience to the public. Was the disruption justified in the pursuit of their cause? And this is the part most people miss... The internal divisions within the PTI, as evidenced by the KP chapter's dissociation from the protest, hint at underlying tensions.
