The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow, which opened in 2015, has been at the center of a scandal that has left families devastated. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has admitted that the hospital opened prematurely and suffered from significant design flaws, particularly in its water and ventilation systems. These flaws, families argue, directly led to infections and deaths among patients, including children like 10-year-old Milly Main. But here’s where it gets controversial: While NHSGGC has apologized and acknowledged a likely connection between the hospital environment and patient infections, they stop short of definitively linking specific cases to these issues. Built at a cost of £840 million, the QEUH campus replaced three older hospitals but quickly became a symbol of mismanagement. Within years, concerns about its water and ventilation systems emerged, leading to a public inquiry in 2019. This inquiry also examined issues at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, where a last-minute delay in opening exposed similar safety concerns. An interim report blamed a spreadsheet error by the health board for the ventilation system’s flaws.
As the inquiry concludes, the families’ demand for justice remains unwavering. They want those responsible to face consequences and for the hospital to finally become a safe haven for patients.
