Revitalizing SkillsFuture: A Call to Action
In his 2025 National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the critical importance of jobs, stating, 'Jobs, jobs, jobs – that’s our No. 1 priority.' This sentiment resonates deeply, as the job market is undergoing profound transformations due to trade wars, supply chain shifts, digitalization, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The impact of these changes is far-reaching, affecting not just lower-paid workers but also well-remunerated white-collar professionals. A 2024 study by the International Monetary Fund revealed that approximately 77% of Singapore's employed resident workers are highly exposed to AI, which is among the highest global shares. This high exposure is attributed to the workforce's concentration in high- and semi-skilled occupations, where tasks are easily adaptable to AI substitution or augmentation.
This reality underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to upskilling and reskilling. SkillsFuture, a platform designed to facilitate learning and development, has been criticized for being used as a 'voucher shop.' It's time to transform SkillsFuture into a dynamic, responsive system that equips individuals with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. By doing so, we can ensure that Singapore's workforce remains competitive and resilient in the face of ongoing disruptions.
