A powerful story of determination and second chances unfolds as we delve into the lives of two remarkable individuals, Jeffrey Passino and Chedy Hampson. These men, despite their successful careers, never forgot the importance of education, proving that it's never too late to achieve your goals.
The Power of Perseverance
For Jeffrey Passino, the Undersheriff of Onondaga County, completing his college education was a personal mission. Despite not needing a degree for his prestigious role, Passino felt a deep-rooted need to finish what he started.
"College was the one thing in my life that I began but didn't complete. I knew I had to finish it eventually," Passino shared.
And finish he did! At 48 years old, Passino proudly earned his associate's degree, joining a cohort of over 300 students at Onondaga Community College's graduation ceremony.
But here's where it gets controversial... Passino's journey to this achievement was far from traditional. He began his studies at OCC while working full-time and balancing family life. However, when the Sheriff's Department offered him an opportunity in 2000, he had to make a tough choice.
"I left OCC to pursue my career in law enforcement. The county retirement benefits and insurance were too good to pass up, especially for my family," Passino explained.
Over the years, Passino's dedication to his work and the department saw him rise through the ranks, from patrol officer to detective for major crimes. Yet, the desire to complete his degree never faded.
"I tried to go back to OCC a couple of times, but my work schedule always got in the way. Between shifts and overtime, it was challenging," he admitted.
Fast forward to a few years ago, Passino found himself in a position where he could finally prioritize his education. He informed his team that he would be taking a step back from after-hours work to focus on his studies.
And so, he embarked on a semester-by-semester journey, completing classes in English, statistics, diversity and culture, and even fitting in some electives. Often, he would rush from work to class, still donning his police uniform. In one class, his peers were surprised to learn that he was a fellow student, not just there to protect them.
"One student raised her hand and said, 'Wait, you're actually taking this class? I thought you were here to keep us safe!'" Passino recalled with a laugh.
Passino's dedication has inspired others. Since his graduation announcement, three officers have approached him, expressing their desire to return to school.
"I hope my story encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter the challenges," Passino said.
Now, let's turn our attention to Chedy Hampson, the founder of TCGplayer.
Hampson's educational journey was equally unique. He attended Mansfield University on a basketball scholarship but had to end his athletic career due to an injury. Undeterred, he continued his studies at Monroe Community College and OCC.
It was during his time at OCC that Hampson's passion for Magic: The Gathering sparked an entrepreneurial idea. He created TCGplayer, an online trading card game platform, which eventually grew into a company with nearly 700 employees. In 2022, eBay acquired TCGplayer for a whopping $295 million, but sadly, eBay shut down the Syracuse office earlier this year.
Despite his success, Hampson never forgot the importance of education. He had accumulated enough credits from his time at various institutions to earn his associate's degree, even though he didn't formally return to OCC.
These two men's stories serve as a powerful reminder that education is a lifelong journey, and it's never too late to pursue your dreams.
What do you think? Are these men's achievements inspiring, or do you believe that formal education is overrated? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
