The investigation into childcare centers in Minneapolis by federal authorities has sparked significant attention and debate. In a social media update on Monday, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), announced that immigration agents are actively engaged in a comprehensive probe into fraudulent activities related to childcare in Minneapolis. This latest move comes on the heels of increased immigration enforcement in Minnesota, a state known for having the largest Somali community in the United States, particularly after former President Donald Trump expressed his opposition to Somali immigrants residing in the country.
State officials have been quick to defend these childcare centers against the serious allegations raised in Shirley's video. The viral clip, which has accumulated millions of views across various platforms since its release over the weekend, accused nearly a dozen daycare centers of failing to provide any real services or having children present during Mr. Shirley's visits.
Tikki Brown, the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, stated that the facilities highlighted in the video have undergone regular inspections. "While we have questions about some of the methods used in the video, we do take the concerns that it raises about potential fraud very seriously," she explained.
Furthermore, state officials provided information to CBS News, a partner of BBC's US media, indicating that they revisited some of the accused sites this week. Notably, two of these centers had already ceased operations, according to their reports.
In a separate analysis conducted by CBS, there was no evidence found supporting claims of fraud at these centers. Most of the facilities referenced in the video maintained active licenses and had all been inspected by state regulators within the past six months, with the latest inspection occurring on December 4 at Sweet Angel Daycare—a site that has received considerable attention online.
FBI Director Kash Patel recently acknowledged awareness of the ongoing social media discussions surrounding this issue, noting that investigations into potential fraud in Minnesota have been underway since the pandemic began. "The FBI seems to believe this situation is only the beginning of a much larger problem. We will continue to trace financial activities to ensure child safety, and this investigation is far from over," Patel remarked on X.
Earlier this year, a federal jury convicted the leader of the now-defunct organization Feeding Our Future in Minnesota, which prosecutors described as being involved in the largest pandemic aid fraud case, reportedly amounting to $250 million (£186 million).
The situation in Minneapolis represents the latest chapter in Trump's extensive campaign against immigration and crime within urban areas across the United States. Earlier this month, Trump reiterated his stance against Somali immigrants, suggesting they should "go back to where they came from" and claiming that "their country is no good for a reason."
Minnesota's political landscape features Democratic Governor Tim Walz, who is also the running mate of former Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming 2024 election. Walz has publicly clashed with Trump over immigration policies and other pertinent issues, stating, "We welcome support in investigating and prosecuting crime. However, using PR stunts to indiscriminately target immigrants does not offer a genuine solution to the problems we face."
